Fundamentals of Knowledge and Techniques in Career and College Counseling
Recommended for counselors with fewer than three years of experience
As a new counselor, it is important to understand the elements of holistic career counseling in schools. Counselors need to learn the art of research to stay apprised of developments in career and college counseling, and how to build collective responsibility among key stakeholders for wider impact and effective outcomes. The workshop will be divided into two sessions
Research 101
Understand the art of sourcing materials, navigating and verifying information, and presenting research to students, parents, and others. Learn how to track developments in academic programs, career pathways, study destinations, universities, prerequisites for undergraduate programs, industry, and the world of work, and structure it for use in your practice.
Architects of Student Futures
Understand how to:
Consolidate different types of career counseling activities to build a structured, continuous, and age-appropriate curriculum with clear objectives and outcomes. Learn how to integrate subject teachers, parents, and school leadership, and build their ownership in counseling efforts.
Learn the critical skill of being a facilitator and enabler to build students’ capabilities, confidence, and readiness to make their own informed decisions, moving away from the expectation of having to provide definitive answers.
Access to Specialized Support and Techniques in Career and College Counseling
Recommended for counselors with more than three years of experience
Most resources on career and college counseling have been developed for students who can easily afford and access opportunities. There is an urgent need to provide information and resources for students who do not have access to the same opportunities, and understand how to meaningfully support them in their higher education journeys. The workshop will be divided into two sessions
Access for All
- Bring inclusion and equitable access by expanding your knowledge and building on your counseling approach for students who are first-generation learners, from lower income groups, are differently-abled, or gender non-conforming. This session will look at gauging the culture, support services provided by institutions, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and best practices of ensuring a rewarding learning experience for students.
The Counselor as Nurturer
- Empathy is an important aspect of being a counselor, helping you address the anxieties, fears, and challenges faced by students and families at various stages of the decision-making process. Learn mindfulness techniques and cognitive frameworks to execute your responsibility with compassion and skill.

Organizations or consortiums will not have tables at the University & High School Exhibits. Organizations are welcome to participate as conference sponsors in the IC3 Expo (in-person and virtual).

Small table-top banners or other small display items to represent your school or university (such as a small sign, mascot, special item) or nominal “giveaways” (OPTIONAL)
Only bring materials and giveaways that are small and lightweight. Remember you will need to be able to travel with all items (as will all other attendees!)
